Spotted
The Kulambangra Thrush (*Turdus kulambangrae*) is an endemic form of Island Thrush, found only on Kolombangara Island in the Solomon Islands. It is a dark, robust thrush adapted to the island's unique montane environment.
Where to spot
Confined to the high-elevation montane forests and cloud forests of Kolombangara Island in the Solomon Islands. It prefers dense, mossy forest habitats.
How to spot
Search for its dark, somewhat glossy plumage and typical thrush shape. It often forages quietly on the forest floor, so looking for subtle movements among leaf litter is effective. Listen for its distinctive thrush calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout the year. Like many island thrushes, it is most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Breeding activity typically occurs during the local wet season.
Kolombangara Island, being a relatively small and isolated volcanic island, hosts a number of endemic bird species and subspecies, including this distinctive thrush.
