Spotted
This rare hybrid emerges from the interbreeding of the Pacific Black Duck and the Northern Pintail. Individuals possess a unique combination of features from both parents, making them distinct and often challenging to identify in the field.
Where to spot
Primarily found in Australasia and parts of Asia, where the Pacific Black Duck is resident and the Northern Pintail occurs as a migrant or winter visitor. Look in various wetland habitats, including coastal estuaries, rivers, and freshwater lakes.
How to spot
Look for a duck with a dark, Pacific Black Duck-like body but with some elongation of the neck and tail reminiscent of a Northern Pintail. The bill shape and color, as well as speculum, may show mixed characteristics.
When to spot
Best observed during the non-breeding season for Northern Pintails, typically autumn and winter, when they would be present in the Pacific Black Duck's range.

Pacific Black Ducks are known to hybridize with Mallards in some parts of their range, leading to concerns about genetic dilution. Their hybridization with a species like the Northern Pintail is a less common, but equally fascinating, genetic occurrence.
