Spotted
This refers to a hybrid involving a Bufflehead and either a Common Goldeneye or a Barrow's Goldeneye, or an unidentified goldeneye hybrid. These hybrids combine the small size of the Bufflehead with the more robust build of a goldeneye.
Where to spot
Wherever Buffleheads and Goldeneyes coexist, predominantly across North America, in freshwater lakes, rivers, and sheltered coastal areas.
How to spot
Look for a duck with a body size intermediate between a Bufflehead and a Goldeneye. Features might include a larger head with a compact body, or mixed head patterns that don't quite fit either parent species.
When to spot
Most observations occur during the winter and migration periods, when goldeneyes and buffleheads share habitat.

Goldeneye species are known to hybridize with other diving ducks, leading to complex identification challenges due to the variable expression of parent traits.
