Spotted
This category addresses ducks that could be either American Black Ducks, Mottled Ducks, or hybrids thereof, found in areas where their ranges overlap, especially along the Gulf Coast. Both are uniformly dark dabbling ducks.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the southeastern United States, particularly along the Gulf Coast, where the wintering range of American Black Ducks overlaps with the resident range of Mottled Ducks. Look in coastal marshes, estuaries, and wetlands.
How to spot
Both species are uniformly dark brown dabbling ducks. Look for differences in bill color (American Black Duck generally has a more olive-yellow bill, Mottled Duck a brighter orange-yellow) and subtle variations in body plumage tone and speculum coloration (both have purplish-blue/blue speculum with limited white).
When to spot
Most likely observed during the fall and winter months when American Black Ducks migrate south into Mottled Duck territory.

While their primary ranges are distinct, there is a zone of overlap and interbreeding potential, leading to individuals that can be difficult to assign to a single species, especially given their overall dusky appearance.
