Where to spot
Likely to be found in regions where the ranges of both parent species overlap, particularly in the Bering Sea area and along the Pacific coasts of North America and Asia.
How to spot
Identifying this hybrid is exceptionally challenging. Look for individuals that show very subtle mixed characteristics in bill shape, head profile, or plumage details that don't quite fit either parent species perfectly.
When to spot
During migration and wintering periods when these scoters gather in coastal waters.
