Spotted
This hybrid combines the diminutive Ross's Goose (Anser rossii) with the slightly larger Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii). Identifying it requires a keen eye for subtle differences in size, bill structure, and plumage details.
Where to spot
Agricultural fields, wetlands, and open water bodies in North America, primarily within the migratory and wintering ranges where Ross's Geese and Cackling Geese overlap.
How to spot
Look for an individual with an intermediate size between the two parents, perhaps a slightly shorter neck than a Cackling Goose, and a bill that is larger than a typical Ross's but smaller than a Cackling, possibly lacking the prominent 'grinning patch' of a Snow Goose. Plumage will likely be a mix of white and dark gray-brown.
When to spot
Most likely encountered during migration seasons (spring and autumn) when large numbers of both parent species are present.

Ross's Geese are the smallest of the 'white' geese, and their hybrids with Cackling Geese often present identification challenges due to their similar overall size and the variability of hybrid traits.
