Spotted
The Calcipar Sabrewing is a recently described species of hummingbird, unique for its strict association with limestone ('calcipar') habitats. It is a Brazilian endemic, highlighting specialized adaptations to its environment.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very restricted area of Minas Gerais state in southeastern Brazil, specifically within the limestone regions of the Serra da Cal in the central Espinhaço Range.
How to spot
Requires visiting its specific limestone habitat. Look for it feeding on bromeliads and other flowering plants in the dry, rocky scrub and forest patches. Its distinct call can also help in identification.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Observation can be challenging due to its localized habitat, but focusing on the dry season might offer better visibility as flowering resources can be more concentrated.
This sabrewing is a highly specialized endemic, found almost exclusively in the dry forests and scrub on limestone outcrops, where it feeds on specific flowering plants adapted to these conditions.
