One of the largest hummingbirds in North America, the Blue-throated Mountain-gem is known for the male's striking blue throat and long, straight bill. It breeds in mountain forests and often moves to lower elevations in winter.
Where to spot
Found in montane pine-oak and mixed-conifer forests at higher elevations, ranging from the southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico) to central Mexico.
How to spot
Look for its relatively large size and listen for its distinctive chipping calls. Males display their brilliant blue gorget while perched. It frequently visits hummingbird feeders.

Present from spring to summer in the northern parts of its range (breeding season), and year-round in southern areas. Most active at dawn and dusk.
