Spotted
The Glow-throated Hummingbird is an exquisitely colored species endemic to the cloud forests of western Panama, highly prized for the male's brilliant, transformative gorget.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid mountain forests, cloud forests, and forest edges in the highlands of western Panama (specifically Chiriquí and Veraguas provinces).
How to spot
Search in the canopy and mid-story of cloud forests. They can be very active and territorial, so watch for aggressive chases among small birds. Hummingbird feeders may also attract them.
When to spot
Present year-round in its restricted range. Best observed during daylight hours, especially when actively foraging among flowers.

The male's gorget dramatically changes color from deep black to brilliant magenta or fiery orange depending on the light, giving it its 'glow-throated' name.
