Spotted
The Okarito Kiwi, also known as Rowi, is a critically endangered and distinct species of kiwi, characterized by its slightly greyer and more slender build compared to other brown kiwis. It is recognized for its relatively long bill and holds the distinction of being one of the rarest kiwi species.
Where to spot
Possesses an extremely restricted natural range, found almost exclusively within the Okarito forest on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Efforts are underway to establish populations in predator-free sanctuaries.
How to spot
Given their critically endangered status and restricted range, direct observation is exceedingly rare for casual observers. The best chance to 'experience' them is to listen for their calls if in the Okarito region after dark. Conservation efforts often involve tracking devices, providing researchers with opportunities for controlled observation.
When to spot
Like all kiwis, the Okarito Kiwi is strictly nocturnal. Observing them in the wild is exceptionally challenging and typically requires participation in highly specialized conservation programs or authorized guided tours within their very limited habitat.

The Okarito Kiwi exhibits a rare behavior among kiwi species and indeed most birds: both parents share incubation duties, taking turns sitting on the egg, making them exceptional and dedicated parents.
