Spotted
The Little Spotted Kiwi is the smallest of the kiwi species, easily identifiable by its finely mottled grey-brown plumage that gives it a distinct speckled appearance. Like its relatives, it is flightless and primarily active during the night.
Where to spot
Primarily found on predator-free offshore islands in New Zealand, such as Kapiti Island, where they have been reintroduced and have established strong populations. They are also now present in a few mainland reserves behind predator-proof fences.
How to spot
Given their small size and nocturnal habits, they are challenging to spot without specific effort. Visiting Kapiti Island or similar sanctuaries offers the best chance of encountering them. Listen carefully for their high-pitched calls, which are distinct from those of other kiwi species. Use red-filtered lights if permitted, as white light can disturb them.
When to spot
Exclusively nocturnal. The best opportunities for observation are during specially organized night-time excursions on the offshore islands or mainland sanctuaries where they are actively managed and protected.

The Little Spotted Kiwi was once extinct on mainland New Zealand due to introduced predators. However, through dedicated conservation efforts, it has thrived on predator-free offshore islands and has been successfully reintroduced to some mainland reserves, making it a significant conservation success story.
