Spotted
The Cape Barren Goose is a large, grey goose native to southern Australia and its offshore islands. It is easily recognized by its distinctive bright yellow-green cere (a fleshy patch on the bill) and striking black feet.
Where to spot
Found in southern Australia, particularly coastal areas, islands, grasslands, and agricultural fields. It is also a common sight in zoos and waterfowl collections worldwide.
How to spot
Look for its stout, grey body, relatively small head, and the prominent yellow-green cere on its black bill. They are often seen grazing in open fields and have a distinctive, pig-like honking call.
When to spot
Cape Barren Geese can be observed year-round in their native range. Their breeding season typically occurs from autumn to winter.

This goose is unusually terrestrial for an Anseriforme, preferring to graze on land and rarely swimming or diving, a behavior more typical of land birds than waterfowl.
