Ruwet's Masked Weaver is a small, bright yellow weaver bird with a black mask, similar to other masked weavers but with subtle distinctions. It is a localized species of open woodlands.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very small area in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Inhabits open woodlands, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its yellow and black masked pattern (in breeding males). Pay attention to subtle differences in the extent of the black mask and plumage tones compared to similar species. Listen for its calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season.
This species is named after Jean-Claude Ruwet, a Belgian zoologist. Its subtle plumage differences require careful observation for accurate identification.
