The Northern Black Flycatcher (*Melaenornis edolioides*) is a common and widespread African flycatcher. It is a uniformly glossy black bird with a slender build, often seen perching upright.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting open woodlands, savannas with scattered trees, forest edges, and cultivated areas, from Senegal east to Ethiopia.
How to spot
Look for its uniform glossy black plumage and upright posture. It often perches conspicuously on dead branches or wires. Listen for its varied, often musical and chattering song.
When to spot
Resident throughout much of its range, active year-round. It is often observed throughout the day, sallying from prominent perches to catch insects.
