Spotted
The Herero Chat (*Namibornis herero*) is a unique and distinctive bird endemic to the arid regions of southwestern Africa. It is characterized by its rufous-brown plumage, pale supercilium, and long tail.
Where to spot
Endemic to the arid and semi-arid shrublands and rocky outcrops of Namibia and southwestern Angola. It prefers areas with dense, thorny acacia scrub.
How to spot
Look for its rufous-brown plumage, pale eyebrow, and often upright posture on a prominent perch. It can be quite shy, so patience is needed. Listen for its varied, often mimic-filled song.
When to spot
Resident year-round. It is often most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon, foraging for insects.
This species is a 'living fossil' within the Old World flycatcher family, representing a very ancient lineage with no close living relatives.
