The New Zealand Storm-Petrel is a critically endangered seabird, once thought extinct for over a century before its rediscovery in 2003. It is a small, dark storm-petrel with a striking white belly band.
Where to spot
Known only from the waters off the north-east coast of New Zealand's North Island, particularly around the Hauraki Gulf, with breeding grounds located on small islands within the gulf.
How to spot
Identify by its small size, dark plumage with a distinct white belly band and white undertail coverts, and a white flash on the upperwing. Requires specialized pelagic tours in its very limited range.
