Circumpolar in the Southern Ocean, breeding on numerous sub-Antarctic islands including the Falklands, South Georgia, Crozet, Kerguelen, Macquarie, and Antipodes Islands.

Look for its blackish plumage, white rump, and the diagnostic black line down the center of its white belly. Its flight is typically erratic and buoyant, often dipping and soaring. Best seen on pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean.
