Where to spot
Circumpolar in the Southern Ocean, breeding on sub-Antarctic islands including the Chatham, Antipodes, Auckland, Macquarie, Crozet, Kerguelen, and Falkland Islands.
How to spot
Look for its small size, dark cap, grey back contrasting with darker wings, and white underparts. Its flight is typically direct and strong, unlike the more fluttering flight of some other storm-petrels. Requires pelagic trips.

Best observed at sea during the austral summer (November-April) when they are active around breeding colonies. Can be seen year-round in various parts of their vast oceanic range.
