Spotted
A small, dark, swallow-like seabird known for its distinctive fluttering flight and 'walking on water' feeding behavior. It's one of the most numerous and widespread seabirds globally, undertaking vast migrations.
Where to spot
Breeds in Antarctica and sub-Antarctic islands. Migrates extensively across all oceans, reaching northern hemisphere waters during the boreal summer (June-September) and tropical regions.
How to spot
Observe from a boat in pelagic waters. Look for its small size, entirely dark plumage (except for a white rump), and characteristic feet-down, pattering flight just above the water surface.
When to spot
Present in Antarctic waters during the austral summer (November-April) for breeding. Can be seen in tropical and temperate waters worldwide during non-breeding migration periods.

Wilson's Storm Petrels have extremely long legs for their body size, allowing them to patter on the water's surface while dipping for food, earning them the nickname 'sea swallows.'
