The New Zealand Kaka is a large, boisterous forest parrot endemic to New Zealand, known for its sociable nature, acrobatic flight, and diverse diet including nectar, fruit, and insects.
Where to spot
Native forests throughout New Zealand's North and South Islands, as well as several offshore islands.
How to spot
Look for its olive-brown plumage with greyish head, bright orange-red undertail coverts, and strong, hooked beak. Listen for its loud, harsh, rasping calls and squawks. Often seen flying rapidly above the canopy or clambering through trees.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly noisy around dawn and dusk. Observable year-round.
Kakas are important pollinators of native trees, especially during winter when they feed heavily on nectar from flowering plants.
