Spotted
The Kakapo is a critically endangered, large, flightless, nocturnal parrot endemic to New Zealand. It is the world's only flightless parrot and the heaviest parrot species.
Where to spot
Currently restricted to several predator-free offshore islands in New Zealand as part of an intensive conservation program. Not observable in the wild on mainland New Zealand.
How to spot
(Highly restricted observation) Requires visiting specific sanctuary islands with permits. Look for its mossy-green plumage, owl-like facial disc, and large, robust build. Listen for its booming calls during the breeding season, usually from high points.
When to spot
Nocturnal. While theoretically observable year-round on their sanctuary islands, access is highly restricted and requires special permission due to their critically endangered status.
