Spotted
The Golden-shouldered Parrot is an endangered parrot species endemic to the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland, Australia. Males are characterized by a black cap, blue wings, golden shoulder patches, and an orange belly.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Cape York Peninsula, northern Queensland, Australia, primarily found in open eucalypt woodlands with a grassy understory and termite mounds.
How to spot
If observed, look for the male's black cap and distinctive golden shoulder patch. Females are duller. Scan for termite mounds, as they are crucial for nesting. Listen for its high-pitched, whistled calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen foraging on the ground. Its endangered status makes observation rare and typically regulated. Most active in mornings and late afternoons.
Similar to its close relative the Hooded Parrot, this species also exclusively nests in termite mounds, a specialized behavior adapted to its specific environment.
