Spotted
A common and widespread small wood-dove found across the Sahel region and parts of East Africa. It is identified by its reddish-brown plumage and dark bill.
Where to spot
Distributed across a wide belt of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal east to Ethiopia and south to northern Uganda and Kenya. Inhabits savannas, acacia woodlands, and dry scrub.
How to spot
Look for its small size, reddish-brown coloration, and dark bill. It often forages quietly on the ground, so a keen eye and patience are useful. Its cooing call is distinctive.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often foraging on open ground, especially in early morning and late afternoon. Can be seen year-round.
This species often joins mixed-species feeding flocks on the ground, benefiting from the vigilance of other birds while foraging for seeds and small invertebrates.
