The Mountain Peltops is a striking bird with glossy black plumage, a broad, flattened bill, and bright white flashes on its wings and underparts. It is a distinctive resident of montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the mountainous regions of New Guinea, typically found in montane rainforests and forest edges at higher elevations.
How to spot
Look for them perched upright on exposed branches within montane forests or along forest edges. Their glossy black plumage and white wing patches are highly noticeable. Listen for their harsh, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its habitat. Most active during daylight hours, often perching conspicuously.
Peltops have an unusual, almost shrike-like bill, with a prominent hook, which they use to catch and hold large insects or small vertebrates.
