The Australian Magpie is a large, iconic black and white songbird, famous for its melodious 'carolling' song. They are intelligent and highly territorial birds, often seen in open country and urban areas.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia and southern New Guinea. Commonly found in grasslands, woodlands, parks, gardens, and agricultural areas.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive, complex, and beautiful carolling song. Easily observed foraging on the ground in open areas. Their bold black and white plumage (with regional variations) is unmistakable.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal at dawn and dusk and during the breeding season (spring), when they may 'swoop' humans perceived as a threat to their nests.
