The Grey Butcherbird is a medium-sized songbird with a beautiful and complex song, known for its predatory habits. It has distinctive black and grey plumage with a large, hooked bill.
Where to spot
Common across most of Australia (except the far north) and southern New Guinea. Found in woodlands, forests, suburban parks, and gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its rich, fluty, and often complex song, which is a key identification feature. Look for them perched prominently on branches. Observe their distinctive black cap, grey body, and robust hooked bill.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring and summer), making them easier to locate by song.

Butcherbirds get their name from their habit of impaling captured prey on thorns or wedging it in tree crevices, 'butchering' it for later consumption, much like a shrike.
