Spotted
The Mountain Cacique is a glossy black icterid with a pale bill and a small patch of golden-yellow on its lower back, often obscured unless the bird moves. It inhabits humid montane forests of the Andes.
Where to spot
Found in the Andes of Colombia, Venezuela, and northern Ecuador. Inhabits humid montane cloud forests and forest edges, typically at higher elevations.
How to spot
Look for a glossy black cacique with a pale bill in the mid-to-upper canopy of montane forests. The yellow patch on the lower back is often hard to see, so listen for its gurgling calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when foraging activity is at its peak.

This species is sometimes considered a subspecies of the Yellow-rumped Cacique, but its distinct mountainous range and subtle plumage differences support its recognition as a separate species by some authorities.
