The Montezuma Oropendola is an impressive, large icterid distinguished by its chestnut body, glossy black head and rump, and a bright yellow tail. It possesses a unique, two-toned bill: orange with a black tip.
Where to spot
Found in Central America, from southern Mexico south through Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica to Panama. Inhabits humid lowland forests, forest edges, and plantations, often along rivers.

Look for its large size, chestnut body, and especially its unique orange-and-black bill. Listen for its unforgettable, gurgling and bubbling song, which sounds like water being poured from a bottle.

Year-round resident. Easily observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) when they form conspicuous colonies with their hanging nests.
