The Small-billed Cacique is a relatively small, glossy black icterid with a distinctly slender, pale bluish bill. Its entirely black plumage except for the bill helps distinguish it from other caciques.
Where to spot
Found in the southwestern Amazon basin, primarily in southeastern Peru, southwestern Brazil, and northern Bolivia. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, often in areas of bamboo or vine tangles.
How to spot
Look for a small, glossy black bird with a very thin, pale bill. It can be elusive in dense vegetation, so listening for its soft, gurgling or whistling calls is often key to finding it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning when foraging for insects and fruit in the mid-story and understory.
