The Golden-winged Cacique is a striking black icterid with brilliant golden-yellow patches on its wings and a pale yellowish bill. It is a medium-sized bird often found in humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in the Andes of South America, from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia. Inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and forest edges, typically at mid-elevations.
How to spot
Look for it foraging in the mid-to-upper canopy of montane forests. Its glossy black plumage and, especially, its bright golden wing patches (visible in flight) are key. Listen for its musical, gurgling calls.

Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning hours, when its calls are frequently heard.
