The Monk Parakeet, also known as the Quaker Parrot, is a highly adaptable and intelligent parrot species native to South America, now widely established in feral populations across various continents. Known for its distinctive calls and unique communal nesting habits, it thrives in both urban and rural environments worldwide where it has been introduced.
Where to spot
Look for Monk Parakeets in cities, suburban parks, agricultural areas, and open woodlands, often in close proximity to human settlements. They are commonly found in their native South American range and in established feral populations in parts of North America (e.g., USA), Europe (e.g., Spain, Italy), and elsewhere. Observe large, bulky stick nests in trees, on utility poles, or other tall structures.
How to spot
These parakeets are easily identified by their bright green plumage, grey face and chest, and highly gregarious nature. They are very vocal, emitting harsh, chattering, and squawking calls, which often reveal their presence before they are seen. They typically fly in fast, direct groups.
When to spot
Monk Parakeets are primarily active during daylight hours, from dawn to dusk. They are resident birds and can be observed year-round in areas where they have established populations, with increased activity during breeding periods.

The Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species known to construct large, complex communal stick nests rather than utilizing tree cavities or existing holes.
