The Omani Owl is a cryptically patterned owl species that was only described to science in 2013, making it one of the newest owl discoveries. It blends seamlessly with the rocky terrain of its habitat.
Where to spot
Known primarily from rocky mountainous terrain and wadis in the Al Hajar Mountains of Oman, with potential distribution in similar habitats across parts of the Arabian Peninsula.
How to spot
Due to its recent discovery and elusive nature, observing the Omani Owl is difficult. Listening for its unique vocalizations and carefully scanning rocky outcrops at night are the primary methods.
When to spot
As a nocturnal species, it is best observed during the night. Its calls are most prominent during the breeding season.
