Matsudaira's Storm-Petrel is a large, dark-brown storm-petrel with a distinctive pale carpal bar on its upperwing. It is found in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands in the Northwest Pacific, primarily the Izu and Bonin Islands of Japan. Disperses widely across the western Pacific and Indian Ocean, even reaching the western Indian Ocean.
How to spot
Identify by its overall large size for a storm-petrel, dark brown plumage, and a noticeable pale carpal bar (a diagonal stripe) on its upperwing. Its strong, direct flight is also a key feature. Best seen on pelagic trips in the western Pacific and northern Indian Ocean.
When to spot
Breeding occurs from spring to autumn. Can be observed at sea during migration and non-breeding periods, making sightings possible throughout the year in different oceanic areas.
