Spotted
The Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel is a small, dark storm-petrel with a striking white, wedge-shaped rump patch. It is primarily found in the tropical Pacific Ocean.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands in the tropical eastern Pacific, most notably the Galapagos Islands, and also on Malpelo Island (Colombia) and Cocos Island (Costa Rica). Disperses widely across the tropical Pacific.
How to spot
Look for its dark plumage, deeply forked tail, and the distinctive white wedge-shaped patch on its rump. Its flight is often erratic and fast. Best seen on pelagic tours in the eastern tropical Pacific, especially around the Galapagos.
When to spot
Breeding season in the Galapagos is generally from May to October, but can vary. Observed at sea year-round within its oceanic range.
This species has evolved highly synchronized breeding cycles on the Galapagos Islands, often linked to the availability of food resources influenced by ocean currents like the Humboldt Current.
