Spotted
The Ashy Storm-Petrel is a small, uniform grey storm-petrel endemic to the Californian coast. It is a nocturnal breeder and considered endangered due to habitat loss and predation.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands off California, primarily the Channel Islands and Farallon Islands. Disperses over coastal and offshore waters from Baja California to Washington state.
How to spot
Identify by its uniform grey-brown plumage, relatively short, square tail, and distinctive flight characterized by shallow wingbeats and glides. Best observed during pelagic trips off the Californian coast.
When to spot
Active at breeding colonies from March to October. Can be seen at sea year-round within its distribution, with concentrations near breeding islands during the summer.
This species nests in crevices and burrows on offshore islands, often returning to the same site year after year under the cover of darkness to avoid predators.
