Spotted
The Masked Wet-season Weaver is a small, bright yellow weaver bird with a black mask during its breeding plumage. Its appearance changes dramatically between seasons.
Where to spot
Found in western Sahelian Africa, from Mauritania to Chad. Inhabits arid and semi-arid savannas, thorny scrub, and dry grasslands, often near water holes.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow and black mask (breeding male) or streaky brown (non-breeding and female). Search arid savannas and listen for its buzzing calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. The striking breeding plumage of males is seen during the wet season (summer), while they are duller and streaky brown during the dry season.
Its common name reflects its strong seasonal plumage changes and its tendency to breed during the wet season when food resources are abundant.
