Rachel's Malimbe is a small, black malimbe with striking red on its forehead, throat, and breast. It is a somewhat uncommon and secretive forest weaver of West Africa.
Where to spot
Found in West Africa, primarily in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Côte d'Ivoire. Inhabits primary and mature secondary lowland rainforests.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black body and distinct red markings on the head and chest. Search the mid-story and understory of dense forest. Listen for its high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the dry season when forest trails are more accessible and birds may be more active at lower levels.
