Spotted
The Orange Weaver is a small, dazzling weaver bird, with breeding males sporting a brilliant fiery orange and black plumage. It is typically found in marshy grasslands.
Where to spot
Widespread across West, Central, and East Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Angola. Inhabits marshy areas, reedbeds, tall grasslands, and cultivated areas, often near water.
How to spot
In breeding season, look for the male's unmistakable brilliant orange plumage. In non-breeding season, look for streaky brown birds in marshy areas. Listen for their buzzy, chattering calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding season is strongly tied to the rainy season when males display their brightest plumage and are active in nest building.
During the non-breeding season, males lose their vibrant orange coloration and resemble the duller, streaky females, making identification challenging outside the breeding period.
