Spotted
A highly elusive and poorly known pheasant found exclusively in the Annamite Mountains. It shares many characteristics with the Crested Argus but is considered a distinct species or subspecies by various authorities.
Where to spot
Restricted to primary broadleaf evergreen forests in the Annamite Mountains of central Vietnam, particularly in areas like Bach Ma National Park.
How to spot
Requires extensive effort in remote, dense forest. Focus on listening for calls and searching for signs of activity, as direct observation is exceedingly rare. Specialist local guides are highly recommended.
When to spot
Similar to its close relative, best chances are early morning or late afternoon, especially during the breeding season when males might call.
Due to its extreme rarity and secretive nature, the Annam Crested Argus is one of the least studied pheasants in the world, with few confirmed sightings.
