Spotted
The Madagascan Mannikin is a small, widespread finch endemic to Madagascar. It is a rather drab, brownish species but is common in many habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to Madagascar, found throughout the island in a wide variety of open and disturbed habitats, including grasslands, cultivated fields, and urban areas.
How to spot
Look for small, brown finches in open habitats, especially agricultural areas. While not colourful, their commonness and flocking behavior make them easy to spot. Listen for their typical munia-like calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round. They are particularly noticeable when foraging in large flocks in rice paddies and open fields.
They are often seen in large flocks, sometimes mixing with other small granivorous birds, especially around rice paddies.
