Spotted
The Lesser Seedcracker is a small, shy finch found in the marshy grasslands and reedbeds of East Africa. It is characterized by its bright red head and rump, and a noticeably large bill relative to its body size.
Where to spot
Found in reedbeds and moist grasslands of East Africa, including Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique. Prefers dense, swampy vegetation.
How to spot
Very challenging to observe. Look for movement in dense reeds or listen for its sharp, clicking calls. The size of the bill is a critical identification feature.
When to spot
Year-round, but often very secretive. Best chances during the dry season when water levels recede slightly.
Seedcrackers are named for their incredibly powerful bills, which enable them to crack open tough seeds that most other finches cannot.
