The Cherry Finch, also known as the Plum-headed Finch, is a charming Australian finch. It is named for the cherry-red or plum-colored forehead and crown on the male.
Where to spot
Endemic to eastern Australia, inhabiting dry woodlands, grasslands, and savannas, often near watercourses.
How to spot
Look for their distinctive red head patch. They are often seen foraging on the ground in grassy areas or perched in shrubs. Listen for their soft, trilling calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round. Breeding primarily occurs from October to April (Southern Hemisphere).
Unlike many finches, they are sometimes observed feeding on insects, particularly during the breeding season.
