Spotted
The Black-bellied Firefinch is a shy and attractive finch found in woodlands and savannas of West and Central Africa. Males are predominantly deep crimson with a prominent black belly patch.
Where to spot
Distributed in woodlands and savannas across West and Central Africa, from Guinea to Uganda and DR Congo. Prefers dense thickets and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in dense cover. The male's black belly contrasting with the crimson body is the key identification feature.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active early morning and late afternoon.
This species often forages secretly in dense undergrowth, making it more challenging to spot than some other firefinches.
