The Madagascar Fody is a widespread and common species across Madagascar and other Indian Ocean islands. Breeding males are brilliantly scarlet red, making them highly visible.

Where to spot

Native to Madagascar, Comoros, and Mayotte. Introduced to Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles, and other islands. Found in a wide range of habitats from forests to cultivated areas and urban gardens.

How to spot

Look for the dazzling red males in almost any open habitat, including gardens and agricultural fields. Their chattering calls and active foraging are also good indicators.
