How to spot
Look for its overall black plumage and the flash of red on its underside, especially when it turns or preens. Search the mid-story and understory of forests. Listen for its quiet chattering calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout daylight hours, often seen foraging in mixed-species flocks.

Despite its generally dark plumage, the flash of red on its vent can be a key identification feature as it moves through the foliage.
