The Cape Weaver is a common and conspicuous weaver bird, with breeding males displaying bright yellow plumage and a reddish-brown face. It is an endemic species of southern Africa.
Where to spot
Endemic to southern Africa, primarily South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. Inhabits fynbos, karoo, savannas, farmlands, and suburban gardens, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow plumage and reddish-brown face (in breeding males). They are often seen in groups around water bodies or in gardens. Listen for their noisy, chattering calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is prominent during the spring and summer (Southern Hemisphere), when males are in their brightest plumage and are actively building nests.
