Where to spot
Widespread across Africa (especially eastern and southern) and parts of the Arabian Peninsula and India. Found in dry, stony grasslands, rocky hillsides, and open savannas with scattered trees.
How to spot
Look for its longer bill and relatively unstreaked upperparts. It often stands more upright than other pipits. Listen for its distinctive, often melancholic, calls and song.

Its longer bill is thought to be an adaptation for probing deeper into the ground or crevices for invertebrates.
