The Mekong Wagtail is a recently described species, endemic to the Mekong River system in Southeast Asia. It is a specialized riverine bird, typically found on sandbars and rocky stretches of the river.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Mekong River and its major tributaries in Cambodia and Laos. Exclusively found along wide, fast-flowing stretches of the river, especially on exposed sand and rock bars.
How to spot
Look for it on exposed sand and rock bars in the middle of the Mekong River. Its plumage is similar to other wagtails, but its habitat preference is key. Binoculars are essential.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the dry season (winter/spring) when river levels are lower, exposing more sandbars and rocks.
