The Mountain Wagtail is an elegant African wagtail species found along clear, fast-flowing mountain streams and rivers. It is characterized by its clean grey and white plumage.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, typically in mountainous or hilly regions with clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams, often with rocky beds.
How to spot
Look for it along rocky riverbanks or on boulders in streams. Its grey upperparts, white underparts, and long tail which it constantly bobs are key. Its clear, sharp calls are also distinctive.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when foraging along waterways.
