The Little Wood-rail is a small, secretive rail endemic to the Atlantic Forest mangroves and coastal wetlands of eastern Brazil. It is characterized by its small size, rufous underparts, dark upperparts, and a pale bill. This species is a specialist of its unique mangrove habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the coastal mangroves and associated wet thickets of eastern Brazil, from Alagoas south to Santa Catarina.
How to spot
Look for its small size and rufous belly in dense mangrove vegetation. It is highly elusive and best detected by its distinctive calls, which include a series of sharp, dry 'kek' notes or a rapid chatter.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active at dawn and dusk, but generally very shy.
